India in Black & White

Railway Labourer, Rajasthan
The labouring work on India's labyrinth railway network is done by both men and women - the women doing much of the carrying work while men do the pick and shovel work.
Some of the labourers are from the nomadic Rabari tribes of Rajasthan and Gujarat States. The jewelry worn by the women, even while working, is both for status and security - the silver and carved ornamental pieces being a large part of the family's wealth, along with livestock. Note that the women is barefooted and walking on rough, angular stones.
