The ancient walls of India's golden city - Jaisalmer in western Rajasthan. The city was founded in 1156 by Rawal Jaisal of the Bhatti clan. The early centuries of Jaisalmer were marred by wars with other Rajput districts as well as the Muslim invaders who occupied Jaisalmer twice. In 17th century, Jaisalmer became established as a maeket centre on the important trade route between India and Central Asia. It was during this period when many of Jaisalmer's beautiful haveli's (merchant homes) were built.
