Kettuvallom are the timber hulled barges used to carry freight on the backwaters. Babu Varghese and his
TourIndia company have acquired a number of old kettuvallom and tastefully converted them to houseboats.
The hull timber is from a local fruit tree, hand-hewn into planks that are bound with locally produced sisal, and sealed with coconut fibre saturated with fish oil.
