Kochi (formerly Cochin) on the Malabar Coast of south-western India(see Map of India) has a long history of foreign visitors, traders and colonialists including British, Potuguese, Dutch and even Chinese mariners from the court of Kublai Khan. Famous as a spice port, Kochi is described evocatively in several wonderful novels (see Arundhati Roy & Salman Rushdie).

The aroma of spices pervades the air of Kochi. "Black Gold" is the name given to Kerala's pepper - and pepper has been like gold for Kochi over many centuries.
Inside the godowns (spice warehouses) the strong, exotic smells of the streets are concentrated to lung-piercing agony - it's imposssible to stay for more than a few minutes before seeking refuge in the street ... gasping for mouthfuls of air.
