Kochi (Cochin)
Kerala
Kochi (formerly Cochin) on the Malabar Coast of south-western India(see Map of India) has a long history of foreign visitors, traders and colonialists including British, Potuguese, Dutch and even Chinese mariners from the court of Kublai Khan. Famous as a spice port, Kochi is described evocatively in several wonderful novels (see Arundhati Roy & Salman Rushdie).

India's busiest harbour is interesting and beautiful. A variety of craft from small canoes with rag cloth sails to ocean-going ships ply the waterways.
Getting around Kochi is far easier by water than by land.
