| Kochi (formerly Cochin) on the Malabar Coast of south-western India(see Map of India) has a long history of foreign visitors, traders and colonialists including British, Potuguese, Dutch and even Chinese mariners from the court of Kublai Khan. Famous as a spice port, Kochi is described evocatively in several wonderful novels (see Arundhati Roy & Salman Rushdie). | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||

- 107 St Francis Church built in 1503 by Portuguese Franciscan friars, and is the burial place of Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama. Although da Gama's remains were later returned to Portugal, the original headstone remains. The church is still used for Sunday services, during which the giant rattan fans (punkas) are manually worked by punka-wallas pulling on ropes. |
