South of Kovalam beach is a small fishing harbour and the village of Vizhinjam - once the capital of the Ay kings, the first dynasty in south Kerala. Vizhinjam is a relatively poor fishing village of thatched cottages and contrasts with the fast-developing tourist resort of Kovalam, just around the headland. A distinctive and colourful mosque stands on the headland of the bay.
