With a reputation as warriors, the former inhabitants of today's Rajasthan were members of smaller princely kingdoms known as Rajputana.
Rajasthan - "the land of kings", was formed in 1949 as these smaller states merged. Rajasthan is the largest state of the Republic of India by
area and encompasses most of the area of the large, inhospitable Great Indian Desert (Thar Desert), which has an edge paralleling the
Sutlej-Indus river valley along its border with Pakistan.
