Tanning Vats
The tanning vats in the Fès-el-Bali medina are not difficult to find - follow the odour that pervades the surrounding district.
The hides are tanned in large wooden vats filled in sequence with saffron, red, indigo, green and black dyes mixed with cow's urine - hence the pungent smell. The process is almost fully manual - the coveted jobs being handed down from generation to generation - and has changed very little over the centuries.
