Building of the Hassan II mosque began in 1980. This ambitious building is the second biggest mosque in the world behind Mecca and provides space for 20,000 worshippers inside and a further 80,000 in the vast courtyard (see #Casa-31). Craftsmen and artisans from all over the Islamic world were employed to adorn the mosque with tiling and fretwork. The funds for building the mosque were raised by public donation - both voluntary and non-voluntary.
